Connecticut

Savoring the Flavors of Connecticut

While relatively small in size, the Constitution State packs a big culinary punch with its rich history, coastal setting, and cultural influences. Connecticut's cuisine showcases classic New England traditions alongside innovative specialties from its thriving cities and diverse communities.

A few tasty facts about Connecticut:

  • The hamburger is believed to have originated in the late 1800s at Louis' Lunch in New Haven, where the first burger was likely served on toast.

  • Connecticut boasts not one but two designated wine trails, with over 40 vineyards and wineries scattered across the state producing highly regarded vintages.

  • The town of Waterbury lays claim to inventing the first vegetarian "turkey" replica made from seasoned nutmeat loaves back in the late 1800s.

  • New Haven is nicknamed the "Pizza Capital of the World" for its chewy, charred apizza (Neapolitan) pies cooked in coal- or wood-fired ovens.

Now let's dig into some of Connecticut's iconic dishes and specialties:

New England Clam Chowder
Packed with fresh clams, potatoes, onions, and salt pork in a rich, creamy broth, this hearty chowder has been a staple for Connecticut's coastal communities for generations. Just be sure to use saltines or oyster crackers as your "spoon."

Lobster Rolls
With its prime location in the lobster-rich waters of the Long Island Sound, Connecticut is a seafood lover's paradise. The classic lobster roll features fresh, chilled lobster meat lightly dressed and cradled in a griddled, buttery split-top bun.

Connecticut-Style Hot Dogs
Texas has chili dogs, Chicago has dragged-through-the-garden dogs, and Connecticut keeps things simple with its beloved bacon-wrapped, deep-fried frankfurters. For extra indulgence, order yours "loaded" with mustard, sauerkraut, pepper relish, and onions.

Apple Cider Doughnuts
When fall arrives, Connecticut residents flock to orchards and farms for fresh-pressed apple cider and piping hot, sugar-coated cider doughnuts for the ultimate seasonal treats. Some clever cooks even incorporate cider into baked goods and savory dishes.

From longstanding seafood traditions and classic Americana fare to trendy farm-to-table innovations, Connecticut offers such an eclectic array of flavors for such a small state. Its diverse culinary heritage is truly worth celebrating.
