Roasting peppers in the air fryer is a game-changing technique that delivers perfectly charred, tender peppers in a fraction of the time compared to traditional methods. Whether you're working with sweet bell peppers, poblano peppers, or chile peppers, this Air Fryer Roasted Peppers recipe will become your go-to approach for adding smoky flavor to your dishes.

These Roasted Peppers make a great addition to my Original Texas Caviar recipe!

The Beauty of Air Fryer Roasted Peppers

Traditional pepper roasting methods often involve placing peppers directly on a gas burner or under a broiler, requiring constant attention. Your air fryer basket transforms this process into an easy air fryer recipe that's practically hands-off. The controlled heat circulation ensures even charring and perfectly tender results every time.

Let's Gather Up the Ingredients:

  • Fresh peppers (any color bell pepper, poblano peppers, or chile peppers)
  • Olive oil or avocado oil
  • Sea salt to taste
  • Optional: Try different seasonings such as Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, or even a splash of balsamic vinegar.

This method will work for any air fryer model, but the cooking times may vary. I have the Ninja Foodi 10-in-1 and my peppers are usually done at around the 15-minute mark.

Now Let's Get Cooking

Step-by-Step Instructions

Preparation

Start by washing your peppers thoroughly and patting them dry. Cut them in half lengthwise and remove the seeds and membranes. This is the easiest way to ensure even cooking.

Oil and Season

Lightly coat the skin of the pepper with olive oil or avocado oil. This helps achieve those desirable black spots that indicate proper charring.

Air Fryer Setup

Place the peppers in your air fryer basket in a single layer. Don't overcrowd - this is crucial for achieving that perfect smoky flavor. You want the tops of the peppers to develop a nice char. If you're roasting multiple peppers, work in batches rather than stacking them.

Roasting Process

Set your air fryer to broil if your model has that function. If not, set it to 400°F (200°C). The total cooking time will be about 15-20 minutes, but this is a great way to customize the process based on your preferences. Flip the peppers halfway through cooking to ensure even charring.

Note: Cook time will vary from one air fryer to another so check them starting at the 10-minute mark.

Steam and Peel

Once the peppers are nicely charred with black spots developing across their surface, transfer them to a large bowl and cover with plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container. This steaming process makes removing the skin much easier. After about 10 minutes, you can easily peel away the skin, revealing perfectly roasted peppers underneath.

Slice the peppers into strips and season with salt and black pepper.

The roasted peppers are now ready to enjoy!

Storage and Uses

Your homemade roasted peppers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. Cover them with a bit of olive oil to keep them moist and flavorful. Cooked peppers are a great addition to your favorite soup, salads, and pasta dishes, or they can be enjoyed on their own as a healthy side dish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I use an air fryer instead of traditional roasting methods?

A: Using an air fryer takes a fraction of the time while providing consistent results. It's also more energy-efficient and requires less attention during cooking, making this method perfect for RV kitchens.

Q: Do I need to peel the peppers after roasting?

A: While not strictly necessary, peeling roasted bell peppers removes the slightly tough outer skin and reveals the tender, silky flesh beneath. The steaming process makes this step much easier.

Q: Can I roast different types of peppers together?

A: Yes, but keep in mind that different pepper varieties may have varying cooking times. Sweet bell peppers and poblano peppers often have similar cooking times, but smaller peppers might cook faster.

Q: How do I know when the peppers are done?

A: Look for charred black spots on the skin of the pepper and a slight collapse of the flesh. The peppers should be tender when pierced with a fork.

Q: Can I freeze roasted peppers?

A: Yes! After peeling, place your roasted peppers in an airtight container or freezer bag. They'll keep for up to 6 months in the freezer.

Tips for Success

- Choose peppers that are firm and free from blemishes

- Keep the pieces relatively similar in size for even cooking

- Don't skip the oiling step - it helps achieve proper charring

- Allow proper spacing in the air fryer basket for optimal air circulation

- For an added bonus, throw some whole garlic cloves into the basket next to the peppers. Roasted garlic cloves are sweet and delicious. They make the perfect addition to dressings and sauces and taste fantastic spread on a toasted baguette.

- Store peppers in high-quality airtight containers to maintain freshness.

This simple air fryer technique for roasting peppers will become a staple in your kitchen. With little effort and simple ingredients, you'll have perfectly roasted peppers ready to enhance countless dishes. The combination of convenience, quick cooking time, and consistent results make this method hard to beat.
