Need a quick guacamole recipe for game day-or just craving a healthy snack? You're in the right place.

If you're an avocado lover like I am, this recipe is a must. It's made with just a handful of ingredients and comes together in minutes. The flavor? Bright, creamy, and better than anything store-bought. Once you make this, I'm pretty sure you'll never go back to the premade tubs again.

Why You'll Love This Guacamole

  • It's fast: You can whip it up in under 15 minutes.

  • It's fresh: No weird preservatives or filler ingredients.

  • It's easy to customize: Add jalapeño, onion, tomato, cumin, cilantro-even bacon!

Let's gather up the ingredients

Ingredients for guacamole

Organizing all of your ingredients ahead of time not only streamlines the cooking process but also ensures you have everything required to complete the dish successfully. You can find the exact ingredient amounts in the recipe card below.

  • Avocados- Use ripe avocados that yield slightly to pressure. Click the link for some excellent information about picking the perfect avocado.

  • Limes- Adds brightness and helps prevent browning. Depending on how juicy the lime is, one is probably sufficient for this recipe.

  • Salt- Brings out the flavor.

  • Fresh garlic- Minced or grated. I like to use a Microplane for the finest texture.

  • Red onion- Optional, but I love the crunch and color. Mince it finely.

How to Make Guacamole (Step-by-Step)

This is the way I make guacamole most often. It's simple, fresh, and doesn't require a bunch of extra dishes, which is always a win when cooking in an RV kitchen.

  1. Cut the avocados in half lengthwise.
  2. Remove the pits and scoop the flesh into a bowl.
  3. Mash the avocados with a fork until you reach your desired texture.
  4. Squeeze in fresh lime juice, stir in the garlic, add salt, and mix it all together.
  5. Optional: Stir in finely minced red onion or anything else you like.

Pro Tip:
If you have a mortar and pestle, use it! It's great for mashing everything together in one dish and makes a beautiful presentation if you're serving guests.

Guacamole Ingredients

And that's really all there is to it! In under 15 minutes, you can make guacamole that is WAY better than the store-bought stuff. And it's a great topping for dishes like these Tacos de Camaron or my White Chicken Enchiladas.

How to Store Leftovers

Guacamole is best eaten fresh, but if you have leftovers, here's how to keep them from turning brown:

  • Transfer to a bowl and smooth the top.

  • Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface (no air gaps!).

  • Store in the fridge for 1-2 days.

Grab a bag of tortilla chips and dig in!

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I keep guacamole from turning brown?
The key is minimizing air exposure. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before sealing the container. You can also add an extra squeeze of lime juice on top to slow oxidation.

Can I make guacamole ahead of time?
Yes! Guacamole can be made a few hours in advance. Just store it in the fridge with plastic wrap pressed directly on the surface to keep it fresh.

How long does guacamole last in the fridge?
Guacamole is best eaten fresh, but it can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. The top may darken slightly-just scrape off the top layer if needed.

What can I add to guacamole to spice it up?
Jalapeños, diced red onion, cumin, fresh cilantro, or even crumbled bacon can kick it up a notch. Make it your own!

Can I freeze guacamole?
I wouldn't recommend it. The texture tends to change once thawed.

What if my avocados aren't ripe yet?
Place them in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple to speed up ripening. They should be ready in a day or two.

Equipment

  • mortar and pestle Optional

Ingredients

  • 3 Ripe avocados
  • 1 Juicy lime you may need 2 if they don't give off a lot of juice
  • 1 Garlic clove pressed through a garlic press or grated on a Microplane
  • Red onion, minced finely optional
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  • Run a knife around the avocado (from top to bottom) and then twist the two halves until the pit is exposed. Pull out and discard the pit. Using a spoon, remove the flesh and place it into a medium-sized bowl.
  • Cut the lime in half and squeeze both halves into the bowl with the avocado. Add the garlic and salt. Using a fork gently mash the avocado halves to your desired consistency and then stir all of the ingredients together.
  • Taste for seasoning and then enjoy with your favorite tortilla chips.

Notes

Guacamole is best when it is eaten right away. If you have leftovers, make sure that you cover them with plastic wrap. Press it directly against the guacamole. This prevents air from getting to it and which will cause it to oxidize and go brown.
